Our Story

Gene and Karl and are keen travellers, and Bruns Surf Shack grew out of the places we love to stay when we’re away - relaxed, considered, and close to the rhythm of local life.

Where you can “live like a local”

As hosts, we want to share our love for Brunswick Heads and the surrounding hinterlands with like-minded guests who value simplicity, nature, and good local living.

We love art and design - throughout the house you’ll find paintings, photography and one-off objects from local Northern Rivers artists as well as from our travels.

Karl comes from a long line of hoteliers in the Northern Rivers, with family roots in the local hotels in Murwillumbah, Lismore, and Kyogle. Hospitality is in his DNA — shaped by generations of people who understand what makes guests feel welcome and cared for.

We’ve tried to create a comfy, beach-shack vibe where you can unwind the moment you arrive, settle in, and feel at home. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoy sharing this special place.
